The following works are by
the key artists in the woodturning world,
David Ellsworth, Giles Gilson, Melvin Lindquist, Mark Lindquist and
Gary Stevens.
Additionally a signed book
by author and independent museum curator Kevin Wallace is included.
Kevin Wallace,
co-author: a signed copy of
Contemporary Turned Wood: New Perspectives in a Rich Tradition
“When the opportunity arose to coauthor the book
that is part of this auction, foremost in my mind was the need for a
text that sets forth the history of the field,” Wallace says.
“This meant discussing the work of those artists who had the
greatest impact on the field - individuals who have generously
donated works for this auction. There is not an artist in the
field today that doesn’t owe Mark and Mel Lindquist, David Ellsworth
and Giles Gilson a tremendous debt - for opening doors, expanding
the language of wood art and for their technical and aesthetic
breakthroughs. Now these legendary figures of the wood art world
have gotten together to offer a group of works to benefit the
victims of Hurricane Katrina.
The
field has grown tremendously since the publication of Contemporary
Turned Wood, and if a new book were created at this point, it would
include a whole new group of artists. Among newer artists,
Gary Stevens is particularly important. He is the only artist
to have been allowed full access to the Lindquist studio over the
last two decades - studying with Mel and Mark Lindquist. Gary
has introduced an exciting new language to the wood medium and will
surely impact the next generation of artists.”
